Consequently, researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are planning an early human trial of the vaccine candidate to begin during the second half of 2019.

  • China's FDA approves new drug for treating HIV

    China Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the sale of a new drug for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, the maker of the drug said. Aikening, or albuvirtide for injection (ABT), can be used with other antiretroviral drugs to treat infected patients who have been treated with antiviral drugs but still suffer from viral replication, according to Frontier Biotech, a pharmaceutical company based in the east Chinese city of Nanjing.

  • A pill that protects people from HIV may also lead to more sex without condoms

    The study, published in The Lancet HIV today, surveyed nearly 17,000 men who have sex with men in Sydney and Melbourne between 2013 and 2017. Use of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP—daily antiretroviral pills taken by uninfected people—during the study years jumped from 2% of the HIV-negative participants to 24%. In the same time frame, “consistent” condom use dropped from 46% to 31% in men who reported having anal sex with casual partners.
