AVAC is a non-profit organization and is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. Our policy, advocacy and outreach work is made possible by the generous support of our members and donors. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry.
In 2021, our budget was $13.8 million of which 87.5 percent was spent on programs, 12.4 percent on finance and administration and less than 1 percent on fundraising. This means that 87.5 cents of every dollar donated to AVAC went toward our policy, advocacy, communications, education and outreach work.
AVAC has attained the highest rating from Charity Navigator, 4-stars, demonstrating strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. AVAC also earned the 2022 Gold Seal of Transparency from GuideStar.

Since its founding in 1995, AVAC has maintained a policy that it does not accept pharmaceutical industry funding. This policy is designed to help safeguard AVAC’s role as an independent advocate for HIV prevention and health equity, and to reduce the possibility, or any possible appearance, of conflict of interest around AVAC advocacy on issues affecting the healthcare industry. Learn more about this in the AVAC Statement on Engagement with the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Industry.
