  • Long-Acting Drug Implant Introduces New Technology to HIV Treatment

    Over a seven-year period, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tested six individual antiretroviral drugs via an injectable implant containing three elements: an organic solvent, a polymer, and the specific HIV treatment drugs. Data showed that all six drugs were released from the implant at effective levels for “a sustained amount of time ranging from one month to a year,” reports Medical Express.

Last week, researchers from The University of Pennsylvania reported their most recent success in plans to develop a herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) vaccine.     Human papillomavirus (HPV) is often associated with cisgender women because it can cause cervical cancer -- sexually active women are told to get regular HPV tests, and when the HPV vaccine first came out, it was specifically marketed to parents of girls. Prevalence of HPV is high among everyone, however, and a new study suggests that cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) have similar rates of four high-risk types of HPV as cisgender women, while cisgender men who have sex with cisgender women (MSW) have slightly lower rates.

    The introduction and rapid expansion of a combination of HIV services in four Ugandan fishing communities has led to the significant decline of HIV incidence, new research finds. Around 40 percent of people in these communities are living with HIV where high levels of mobility, transactional sex, multiple sexual partnerships, and alcohol use drive HIV transmission. This, coupled with the presence of large proportions of men who tend to access HIV prevention, testing and treatment services less than women, provides a challenging environment for reducing the number of new infections.
