  • Over a seven-year period, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tested six individual antiretroviral drugs via an injectable implant containing three elements: an organic solvent, a polymer, and the specific HIV treatment drugs. Data showed that all six drugs were released from the implant at effective levels for “a sustained amount of time ranging from one month to a year,” reports Medical Express.

  • As of this month, about 11,000 people had been initiated on PrEP since its regulatory approval in 2016. Zimbabwe is a HIV high burden country with thousands of new infections each year which makes the call for urgent, large scale PrEP roll out even more prudent.

  • Lack of HIV/AIDS prevention measures suitable for women is said to be putting more women at risk of contracting the virus. SRHR Africa Trust Country Programme Officer, Novice Bamusi, said this during media training and an update on Biomedical HIV Prevention Options Agenda in Blantyre yesterday. He said most HIV prevention methods such as the use of condoms and circumcision put men in control on whether to protect themselves and their partners from contracting the virus.

  • Awareness of a pill for “preexposure prophylaxis,” or PrEP, is high for all groups of men who have sex with men. But lower proportions of black and Hispanic men, compared with white men, have actually gotten prescriptions for the drug, which is 99 percent effective at preventing HIV transmission, the study team found.

  • “Nothing is developed for us, without us,” Arianna Lint said as she handed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director, Robert Redfield, a copy of Positively Trans’ new needs assessment of transgender and gender nonconforming people living with HIV. Lint was joined by a large group of people living with HIV on stage at the United States Conference on AIDS in Washington, D.C., earlier this month to disrupt the opening plenary with Redfield and create a dialogue where there wasn’t one.

  • Herpes is one of the most prevalent viruses in humans, but this may not always be the case. Last week, researchers from The University of Pennsylvania reported their most recent success in plans to develop a herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) vaccine. The goal is for this vaccine to work similarly to that currently used to prevent HPV infections, and thus significantly lower the prevalence of herpes infections in future populations.

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is often associated with cisgender women because it can cause cervical cancer -- sexually active women are told to get regular HPV tests, and when the HPV vaccine first came out, it was specifically marketed to parents of girls. Prevalence of HPV is high among everyone, however, and a new study suggests that cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) have similar rates of four high-risk types of HPV as cisgender women, while cisgender men who have sex with cisgender women (MSW) have slightly lower rates.

  • The introduction and rapid expansion of a combination of HIV services in four Ugandan fishing communities has led to the significant decline of HIV incidence, new research finds. Around 40 percent of people in these communities are living with HIV where high levels of mobility, transactional sex, multiple sexual partnerships, and alcohol use drive HIV transmission. This, coupled with the presence of large proportions of men who tend to access HIV prevention, testing and treatment services less than women, provides a challenging environment for reducing the number of new infections.

  • Previous research has determined that testing for HIV in emergency department settings is an effective way to diagnose individuals with HIV who may be otherwise hard to reach. New research has built upon this and found that jump-starting HIV treatment in the emergency department could be a key to curbing the spread of the virus.
