Media Coverage

  • Business is not proceeding as usual at the Black AIDS Institute (BAI), a national nonprofit headquartered in Los Angeles and focused on HIV education, prevention and treatment among African Americans. “Raniyah Copeland no longer serves as our chief executive officer,” reads an August 20 letter addressed to the BAI community and signed by Grazell R. Howard, the chair of the board of directors at BAI. Meanwhile, a group of four HIV activists—all current or former board members—launched a petition on Change.org urging the BAI board to resign and make way for a new board to govern the organization.

  • More than half of individuals who started HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in a large Northern California care management organization discontinued PrEP in a 6½-year study period, researchers report. African American and Latinx individuals, women, and participants with substance use disorder were more likely to experience gaps in the PrEP care continuum, from initial contact with a provider to adherence over time.

  • Last week, I was vacationing at a well-known gay beach getaway with a friend who was making the most of our stint in paradise to, shall we say, make as many “new friends” as possible. Something on the order of two or three a day. Both awed by his stamina and jealous of his high yield, I joked that he would certainly be bringing some of those “new friends” home with him—in the form of gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia. (He’s already on PrEP to prevent HIV.)

  • Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, policy makers have looked to the lessons learned from the HIV pandemic. Both the COVID-19 and the HIV pandemics have demonstrated disparate effects due to structural inequities. The burden of both COVID-19 and HIV has been placed on vulnerable groups living in social conditions that make prevention of these diseases difficult to impossible. A population acutely affected by inequities in both COVID-19 and HIV is those with criminal justice (CJ) involvement. HIV prevalence among CJ-involved adults is three times higher than in the general population.

  • Consider the hamburger. The perfect union of otherwise ordinary ingredients – bread, ground beef, basting and lettuce. Hamburger toppings abound (cheese, avocado, onions), but you’ve got to get the basics right or the whole thing becomes a bit hard to swallow. Scientific research is a lot like a hamburger.

  • In June, Bhekisisa started doing research for an article that would explain how well Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine works and to gauge whether it would be suitable for use in South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. Soon enough, it was realised Sputnik V had flouted the rules of every part of the system that produces scientific research.

  • Medical experts are mulling over new ways to increase the uptake of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce HIV infections in Nyanza. They say the drug is one of the interventions transforming the fight against HIV and AIDS. But the experts now claim the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the uptake of the drug by high-risk populations.

  • During the pandemic, researchers and academic journals have gone into hyperdrive in order to produce research at an accelerated pace. This means some sacrifices have been made when it comes to vetting and checking publications through peer review. The peer-review system was already flawed even in pre-pandemic times but the current environment has exposed ways in which bad science can slip through.

  • One thing I’ve heard a lot of in the past year or so from friends both IRL and on social media, is: “How could we get multiple COVID-19 vaccines in less than a year, while we’ve known about HIV for nearly 40 years and we still don’t have an HIV vaccine? The pharmaceuticals must be stopping it because they’re making too much money off the HIV drugs!”
