  • The first journal-published analysis of HIV infections seen HPTN 084, the study comparing the effectiveness of injectable versus oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in cisgender women, has been published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Headline findings were reported in November 2020 when the study was stopped early due to the clearly superior effectiveness of the injections.

  • A key factor that limits access to antiretroviral therapy is conflict or war. For this reason, we are deeply concerned about people living with HIV in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, an area that’s been the focus of our work. Currently, there’s a conflict between Ethiopia’s central government and the regional Tigrayan government.

  • Last week, the media picked up on a story that President Joe Biden's Chief Medical Advisor — and America’s doctor (at least to me) — was toying with the idea of retirement. Appearing on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Dr. Anthony Fauci reassured George and the rest of us that he will stay on his job until the COVID-19 fight is over.

  • This morning, ViiV Healthcare announced the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a label update for Cabenuva, their cabotegravir and rilpivirine long-acting HIV treatment. The FDA acquiesced to make the therapy’s oral lead-in with cabotegravir and rilpivirine tablets optional. Now, cabotegravir and rilpivirine may or may not be taken orally for a month to assess tolerability, before initiating cabotegravir and rilpivirine injections.

  • Over half a million dollars was awarded to HIV scientists in the latest round of grants from amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. Specifically, Anjie Zhen, PhD, of the University of California at Los Angeles received a $100,000 research grant to explore a unique method of boosting CAR-T therapy in hopes of leading to an HIV cure. And three young grantees each received a Mathilde Krim fellowship of $150,000. The fellowships are named after Krim, who helped found amfAR and publicly fought prejudice against those living with HIV.

  • A study published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes looked at whether providing sex workers in Kampala, Uganda with a monthly supply of HIV self-testing kits in addition to the standard of care of quarterly in-clinic HIV tests would increase adherence to PrEP or influence sexual risk behaviours.

  • In basement shelters and makeshift clinics, Ukrainian doctors are striving to keep treatment for HIV-positive people on track as Russia's invasion raises fears that years of progress to combat the virus could be undone. Russian bombing and fighting has shuttered HIV clinics in two Ukrainian cities and forced others to limit their services, a leading nonprofit said, while the supply and distribution of vital antiretroviral drugs is also at risk.

  • AIDS denialism — the government’s refusal to acknowledge HIV as the cause of AIDS, and as a result provide people with HIV with lifesaving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment — may have cost at least a third of a million South Africans their lives. That’s how many people would likely not have died of AIDS, had they had access to treatment. Now lobbyists pushing for vaping as a way to help people quit smoking insist taxing e-cigarettes like traditional smokes is leading down a similar path.

  • An oral abstract presented at the virtual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) described the first case of a US woman living with HIV-1 who is now in remission. The woman received a specialized stem cell transplant - umbilical cord blood cells with a mutation protective against HIV-1 combined with stem cells from a related adult donor - following an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosis.

  • San Francisco’s aggressive, nationally recognized push to drive HIV infections to near zero and improve the health of those living with the virus took a discouraging hit during the COVID pandemic, as attention citywide focused on a new and different public health crisis.

  • Over the past decade, data have suggested that antiretroviral therapy (ART) may be associated with an increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, namely, preterm birth (PTB). But a combination of methodologic challenges, demographic gaps, and spotty clinical data has left the question unresolved, especially for pregnant women with HIV who reside in developed countries.

  • Many have expressed major disappointment after a bill went through last week that allocates funding for HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and research programs for areas in the US most impacted by the virus. Instead of supporting the $245 million increase proposed in President Biden’s original budget, the final bill only increased the funding by $70 million, according to press release from the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute.
