  • Community mobilisation and ownership were central to the success of a PrEP demonstration project conducted with female sex workers in Mysore, India, a recent qualitative study has found. PrEP was gradually introduced, spearheaded and endorsed by respected community leaders, including those living with HIV. As opposed to a singular focus on the benefits of the biomedical HIV intervention, the community leaders sought to understand how best to initiate and revitalise connections within the community, and to the organisation itself, while recruiting sex workers to participate in the PrEP demonstration project.

Zydus Cadila, the vaccine’s developer, said it plans to make up to 120m doses annually, with the first licensed shots expected to be given next month. DNA vaccines could play a part in fighting other illnesses such as cancer and HIV, too. So how do they work, and how different are DNA vaccines from others already on the market?

  • Women of trans experience are unlikely to think they could benefit from HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).... But guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) miss a lot of trans women too. The study is just the latest to look at the barriers to and benefits of PrEP for trans women. Previous demonstration projects have found that access to both gender-affirming care and PrEP improves uptake of the prevention pills. Studies also show that PrEP drugs don’t impact feminizing hormone levels.
