    In a recent interview with STAT, [Bill Gates] talked about how he made the case for global health — and vaccines — to Trump. Though the meeting took place several weeks ago, Gates didn’t speak publicly about the most recent meeting after it took place. “Absolutely!” Gates answered emphatically, when asked if he raised the topic of vaccines with the new president. Vaccines “are miracles and have done great things, and when we get new ones, we can do a lot. That definitely came up.”

  • Walgreens Healthcare Clinic locations to offer testing services for sexually transmitted infections

    Beginning April 25, Walgreens Healthcare Clinic locations in select markets will offer testing services for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, Hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, gonorrhea and other conditions. The services will be offered in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus (Ohio), Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Knoxville, Las Vegas, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Tucson, Washington DC and Wichita.

  • Bone mineral status unaffected by HIV in South African women

    HIV infection had no discernible effect on bone mineral status in black South African women over the course of 1 year, study data showed. Researchers noted, however, that clinicians should be aware of potential bone loss linked with ART, [writing}:... “This study suggests that, in urban, black South African women, HIV infection per se has no discernible effects on bone mineral status over a 12-month period but that exposure to TDF-based ART is associated with loss of bone mineral and an increase in bone turnover."

  • Exploring an easy way to make on-demand PrEP last longer in the body

    Brandon Gufford, PharmD, PhD, received an $85,000 Campbell Foundation grant to study a strategy to boost the effectiveness and lower the cost of Truvada as on-demand PrEP... Gufford, a researcher at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and his team will collaborate with scientists at the University of Colorado in a study that combines Truvada with Probenecid (PRO), an oral drug that could increase the length of time Truvada is active in the body.

  • Miriam recruits women for new, experimental way to prevent HIV infection

    Dr. Susan Cu-Uvin is the principal investigator for this study looking at a strip of film. What's in this small strip are antibodies. The strip is inserted vaginally... The Miriam Hospital is recruiting 30 women in Southern New England to take part... The animal studies that led up to this investigation, Dr. Cu-Uvin says, showed this plant-based antibody to be protective against the virus for up to 24 hours after insertion.

  • Black HIV-positive MSM in US still have lower rates of ART use

    The proportion of newly diagnosed HIV-positive men who have sex with men in the United States who were promptly linked to care and started ART increased substantially between 2008 and 2014, investigators report in the online edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases. But the research also revealed racial disparities in ART initiation rates, which in 2014 were 9 percent lower among black compared to white MSM.

  • Trouble as dominant HIV testing kits fail crucial WHO test

    Of the eight most widely used HIV Rapid Diagnostic Tests, seven of which are pre-qualified by the WHO, only one met the recommended threshold in a recent evaluation. Blood samples were collected from HIV clinics in Kenya, Guinea, Uganda, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and tested with the eight kits at a WHO collaborating laboratory in Antwerp, Belgium.

    Las Vegas has set up a vending machine to dispense clean needles to IV drug users — the first program of its kind in the country. It’s designed to reduce the spread of dangerous infectious diseases like AIDS and hepatitis C through shared needles by making clean needles more accessible.     This week, a study finds that for individuals living with HIV, experiencing symptoms of depression does not increase mortality risk. Another study finds that common sexual practices among pregnant women and new mothers in Kenya may decrease the effectiveness of some HIV prevention methods. And PrEP is a good option for HIV prevention among individuals who use injection drugs.

  • Homeless US military veterans have high rates of HIV, HCV and HBV

    Homeless veterans in the United States have a significantly higher prevalence of infection with HIV, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus compared to non-homeless veterans, investigators report in the online edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases. Prevalence of these viral infections was up to three times higher among homeless veterans compared to non-homeless veterans.

  • Malaria drug could cut women’s risk of other infections

    Results of the study by researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, a medicine recommended during antenatal care visit for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnant women in malaria-endemic areas, could cut the risk of getting STIs such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis.
