  • Precisely because of the overwhelming success in recent years of oral PrEP -- which various large studies have found to prevent HIV by anywhere between 90 to 100 percent -- that the future of the douche and other sorts of topically applied anti-HIV agents, such as gels and dissolvable films, all loosely termed "microbicides," is suddenly up in the air, if not outright doomed.

  • Several vaccines and drugs for preventing the spread of HIV are showing signs of success in clinical trials, three decades after scientists began the search. But some researchers fear that progress will stall without a coordinated strategy to ensure that the most promising therapies to prevent infection win support from policymakers and reach the people who need them.

  • Researchers have found that a slight modification to the broadly neutralizing HIV antibody known as VRC01 lengthens its staying power in the body. This tweak could lower the cost and reduce the necessary frequency of injections of the long-acting antibody for use as HIV treatment or for prevention of the virus.

  • Three in five gay men in Ireland say they would tell a new partner about their HIV status. A 'Gay Community News' survey found those aged 41 and over were much less likely to talk about their HIV status than 24 to 30-year-olds. It found that many are still getting the drug PrEP, which can reduce the transmission of HIV, over the internet.

  • The writers of the Trump administration’s “American Budget” for the coming fiscal year give themselves a pat on the back in advance…. Just as cutting funding for effective tuberculosis programs led to resurgent TB infections and multidrug-resistant TB, this budget… will lay the ground for increases in new HIV infections and a resurgence of HIV-related illness and death.

  • The biggest barrier to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) becoming more available and more widely used is not cost so much as widespread acceptance of the status quo in HIV prevention, the first-ever European PrEP Summit, held in Amsterdam earlier this month, heard. Ignorance – among politicians, among healthcare workers, and among potential users of PrEP – was the main reason Europe lags far behind the USA in PrEP provision, despite there being a possibly more favourable climate in terms of potential drugs costs.

  • At least 14,631 Russians died from AIDS-related symptoms in the first half of 2017—an increase of more than 13 percent from the year earlier. Russia now hosts the largest HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, which, along with the Middle East and North Africa, make up the world’s only two regions where the rate of HIV cases is rising.
