  • PrEP campaigns must include youth, communities of color

    The Department of Public Health has launched an ambitious campaign called Getting to Zero: zero HIV transmissions, zero deaths from HIV-related illnesses and zero HIV stigma in San Francisco by 2020. Sandy Close, the director of New America Media who moderated a panel on how to close the information gap on PrEP in underserved communities, called it a “break the silence issue,” referring to the stigma and misconceptions about PrEP and HIV.

    Peter Sands was announced as the new executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Tuesday. The news follows a chaotic few days during which Sands withdrew from the leadership race “for personal reasons,” the Global Fund’s communications director Seth Faison told Devex, and then unexpectedly re-entered the race on Monday.

  • New Zealand's publicly funded PrEP would cost only $5 every three months

    If the funding goes ahead PrEP will be available in pharmacies to those with a valid prescription from their doctor. NZAF estimated that PrEP would be available for NZD$5 (US$3.40) per 90 pills, which is three month’s supply.

    The eighth annual POZ 100 list is dedicated this year to celebrating women. In the United States, women represent about a quarter of people living with HIV. Clearly, the idea that HIV affects only men who have sex with men is a myth. That said, because of this long-standing myth, women are often ignored or dismissed as an afterthought in the larger discussions surrounding HIV/AIDS.

  • No change in cognitive function or brain structure in people taking effective HIV treatment for 2 years

    People with HIV taking antiretroviral treatment who had undetectable viral load did not suffer any loss of cognitive function or brain volume during a two-year period when compared with their HIV-negative peers, but did have lower cognitive function and brain volume at the start of the study, suggesting that changes occur before effective treatment starts, according to the findings of a study published this week in the journal JAMA Neurology.

    In a recent five-year period, Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) saw no new HIV infections among its 5,104 patients who spent an average of one year taking Truvada (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Meanwhile, leaders at the health care provider want to broaden the definition of “PrEP failure” to include those who test positive during PrEP screening, who consider but don’t start taking it, or who stop taking it.
