  • Mother-to-child HIV infection down to 3.7%

    Nearly all mothers living with HIV in Kenya can now safely give birth to HIV negative babies, if they follow treatment guidelines. The ministry says by last year only 3.7 per cent of mothers passed the virus on to their babies, largely because they failed to get proper treatment during pregnancy and birth.

    State financial regulators in New York said Wednesday that they would investigate reports that gay men have been denied insurance policies covering life, disability or long-term care because they were taking medication to protect themselves against HIV.

    Homa Bay county has partnered with a United Nation’s funded organisation to sensitise men to go for HIV/AIDS testing. The initiative by Men Engage Kenya Network is facilitated by UNAIDS and aims at encouraging men to take a test.

  • Trump budget plans would slash HIV/AIDS funding

    The GOP billionaire has come under fire from LGBT groups following the release of his 2019 budget plans released on Monday. The budget includes cuts to domestic HIV/AIDS programs, despite the growing needs, including elimination of Special Programs of National Significance (SPNS). Meanwhile the plan includes a cut of over a billion in funding for global HIV programs.

    The medical effectiveness of PrEP for preventing HIV transmission is certain, however NHS England’s PrEP IMPACT trial was designed to answer questions about the need for the drug, and how to reach the most at-risk populations. With trial places capped, and interest very high, 56 Dean Street (part of Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust) will add an Additional Private Care process offering PrEP for £55 a month (30 tablets) to those who have missed out on a place on the IMPACT trial.

  • South Africa still has four critical gaps to fill before it sees the end of AIDS

    To complete the last leg South Africa has four important things to do. It must address the gaps in HIV testing; it must start people on antiretroviral treatment and make sure that they remain on it; it must ensure that people maintain virological suppression and, lastly, it must strengthen its strategies around prevention.

  • Victorian government extends life-saving HIV drug research trial

    Last week it was announced that life saving HIV-preventative Truvada, otherwise known as PrEP, will be listed under the Federal Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Meaning that from March 1, the revolutionary drug will cost Australians tens of dollars, as opposed to tens of thousands of dollars.
