  • About 22,000 people died of Aids-related illnesses in Zimbabwe last year with reports that the highest number of deaths were recorded in Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South, Harare and Mashonaland West provinces. The figure has however relatively gone down compared to five years ago when more than 30,000 people would succumb to the virus.

  • Over the past year, there has been a dramatic shift in the amount of space vaccines occupy in the public consciousness. During the development and testing of the current COVID-19 vaccines, people followed the different phases of the clinical trials like an early season of American Idol. In fact, many referred to and thought of it as the “race for a vaccine.” This, of course, makes sense, given that from the very start of the pandemic, public health officials made it clear that having a safe, effective vaccine was our ticket back to some type of normalcy.

  • Recently, the leaders of nearly two dozen countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) called for a treaty that aims to mitigate the damage of future pandemics. Yet, the list of countries excludes the most powerful nations in the world, including the United States and China. And without them, global collaboration to avert pandemics will be as futile as it is necessary.

  • What a whirlwind. It's been just over a year since the World Health Organization declared a worldwide pandemic on March 11, 2020, and only a few months since Pfizer and BioNTech released data showing their vaccine was highly effective at preventing COVID-19, with other companies following soon after. Merely weeks after the initial announcements, shots were entering Americans' arms.

  • There has been a rapid, historic shift in HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men in Australia, according to a new analysis of community surveys over five years. While consistent condom use has fallen dramatically, the uptake of PrEP and HIV treatment mean that “net prevention coverage” has increased. The study by Professor Martin Holt of the University of New South Wales is published in the April issue of AIDS.

  • A study recently published in The Lancet medical journal found that women living with HIV made up an estimated 63.4 percent of new cervical cancer cases in South Africa in 2018 – a dramatically higher percentage than the global level of around 6 percent. The study also found that women living with HIV on average have a six-fold higher risk of developing cervical cancer than women who are not living with HIV.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has lasted only slightly more than a year; the AIDS epidemic, by contrast, now spans decades. Just as AIDS has taken more than 670,000 lives in this country, scientists have long dreamed of a day when they could inoculate the population against HIV, the virus which causes the deadly disease.
