  • Tanzania Lowers HIV Self-Testing Age to 15

    The Tanzanian parliament has passed a new law allowing HIV/AIDS self-testing and lowering the age of HIV testing without parental consent to 15 years. "These amendments will significantly accelerate our intentions to meet the 90-90-90 goals which aim at ending the AIDS epidemic by 2020," Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu told the House in the capital Dodoma.

  • FDA Should Make Anti-HIV Drug Over the Counter

    Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar announced last week a federal suit against Gilead Sciences, makers of pre-exposure prophylaxis against HIV, also known as PrEP, claiming the company is infringing on government patents while selling these prescription-only drugs at high prices.   • Joburg Clinic Rolls Out HIV Self-Testing Kits to Locals

    A non-profit clinic in Johannesburg is rolling out self-screening HIV kits in a bid for more South Africans to know their HIV status. One in five South Africans do not know their HIV status. The Witkoppen Clinic, Unjani Clinics Network and Johannesburg North GP Network - the project which is funded by the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute - have distributed more than 3 500 HIV self-screening kits to patients in the past two months.

    The Ministry of Health and Child Care has started rolling out Dolutegravir (DTG), a new antiretroviral drug which is more effective in viral suppression and has fewer side effects. New HIV patients were the first to benefit from the nationwide roll out which started in September this year.

    I’ve had a number of people ask me about the news stories the last few days which keep saying that there’s a a “cure for HIV” coming. This all goes back to a Maryland company, American Gene Technologies, and a gene therapy they’re working on called AGT-103T. This is an attempt to use a lentiviral-based gene therapy to produce patient-derived CD4 helper T cells that will allow the immune system to recognize and eliminate HIV, while themselves remaining (in theory) immune to infection (through modification of CCR5 and CXCR4).

  • French Study Finds One in Six Stops PrEP Within 12 Months, One in Three After 30 Months

    PREVENIR, the French open-label study looking at PrEP use in gay and bisexual men in the Paris region, has found that 16 percent of study participants either told clinicians they were stopping PrEP or disappeared from the study within a year, and that 32 percent had discontinued PrEP after 30 months.

  • Global Health Research Needs More Than A Makeover

    During the 1990s, I was doing my medical training in India. Those days, we had a steady stream of American and European students visiting our medical school. They would stay for a few weeks, work on short-term projects, and go back home to publish their research in international journals. None of us got to publish much, despite the fact that we (the locals) had lived experience in dealing with the problems under study, and had deeper insights than our visitors could have gained in a few weeks.

    Black men who have sex with men (MSM) face substantial disparities in HIV treatment among men in the United States. The use of drugs further compounds sexual risks, disrupts treatment adherence, and impacts health care utilization in this population. While more attention is being paid to the effects of drug use on HIV treatment and prevention, it is important to assess perceived health care provider stigma, perceived cultural incompetency, and mistrust of medical systems curtails in efforts to reach black MSM who use drugs.
