  • The National AIDS Control Council will incorporate the county governments in the new National HIV Strategic Framework to fight the spread of HIV-AIDS....NACC Coast regional coordinator Julius Koome said county governments must work with the national government in ensuring funds are set aside for HIV-AIDS prevention projects. "We are talking with the counties to ensure a certain percentage of budgetary allocation is channeled towards the HIV-AIDS kitty," he said. Koome said they cannot continue waiting for donor support to fight HIV....

  • Johnson & Johnson has signed a deal with ViiV Healthcare, the HIV-focused venture majority-owned by GlaxoSmithKline, to spin their two antivirals into a single tablet, potentially sparing patients from some harsh side effects associated with current therapies and challenging Gilead Sciences' dominance. The plan is to combine J&J's rilpivirine, which prevents HIV from replicating itself in cells, and ViiV's dolutegravir, which blocks an enzyme that allows the virus to crack its host's DNA....

  • A US Senate spending panel today approved a draft bill that would raise the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) budget by $605.7 million, to $30.5 billion, in the 2015 fiscal year that begins 1 October.   • Kenya's Ministry of Health released statistics yesterday stating that approximately 13,000 babies are born with HIV annually, averaging 35 infants each day. Health Secretary James Macharia spoke June 9 at the Red Cross Headquarters in Nairobi’s South C where he received equipment procured by the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Red Cross with support from the Global Fund. Macharia said, “This trend is unacceptable and must be reversed”....

  • Back in 2012, the GAVI Alliance announced plans to help immunize 30 million girls in 40 countries with HPV vaccines by 2020. Wednesday, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation chipped in toward that goal with a $25 million investment that will be matched through the UK's Department of International Development. The funding will be used across GAVI's HPV programs, going toward the purchase of both Merck's Gardasil and GlaxoSmithKline's Cervarix...to supply developing countries....
