  • Thousands of HIV negative Kenyans will for the first time in history be placed on daily ARV pills this month to prevent infection. The pills will be given to those at high risk of contracting the virus, the Health ministry said on Tuesday....Martin Sirengo, head of the National AIDS and STI Control Programme, said trained health workers will assess who qualifies for this treatment, technically known as Preexposure prophylaxis (Prep).

  • An HIV-positive bone marrow transplant recipient at the Mayo Clinic experienced prolonged viral remission lasting nearly 10 months – longer than the so-called Boston patients – after interrupting antiretroviral therapy (ART), according to a report at CROI 2017 last month. Although his viral load eventually rebounded, his HIV reservoirs appeared to be reduced.

One approach for accomplishing this is self-testing; another is to offer HIV testing where such groups congregate....Compared to the cost of annual treatment, the investment made in simple in-house systems, mobile data collection platforms and data transmission platforms would be a small cost.

  • Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's...formal appeal of the OMB's initial budget proposal seeks to restore some of the huge cuts proposed by the White House for State Department and foreign assistance funding....The bottom line is that funding for diplomacy and development will be the subject of a series of negotiations and likely fall somewhere between what the White House and Congress each want. Tillerson's challenge is to navigate between those two power centers and do as much as he can to defend the programs he believes in.

  • On Friday, Utah's House Judiciary Committee voted to expand the state's definition of nonconsensual sex to include when a person with HIV who knows his or her status does not disclose it prior to sexual conduct. The bill would also increase penalties for other sexual offenses when the person convicted has HIV....In a hearing on the bill, Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah,...expressed concern that HB 369 could hamper efforts to prevent sexually transmitted infections, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
