  • A study in France that matched new HIV diagnoses in adult men who had been taking PrEP with diagnoses in men at similar risk who had not been taking it, has found that the overall effectiveness of PrEP in stopping infection in this high-risk population was 60 percent. This 60 percent effectiveness figure included some men who discontinued PrEP for at least three months during the study period and who in many cases did not resume it. PrEP effectiveness in men who did not discontinue PrEP was 86 percent, similar to that found in randomised controlled trials.

  • South Africa’s approval of two HIV therapies for children is likely to improve treatment compliance in the world’s worst affected nation as the new products are more palatable for infants than previous incarnations. Babies and toddlers are prone to spit out medications they don’t like and the newly approved treatments take away the “yuck” factor, Linda-Gail Bekker, director of the Desmond Tutu HIV Center, said Tuesday.

  • Fauci commits acts of science 12 to 16 hours a day, seven days a week. No wonder the man wants a drink. But this schedule and suck-it-up worldview have allowed the 81-year-old — who serves as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and chief medical adviser to the president of the United States — to tackle one pandemic after another, from AIDS to COVID-19. During the seven hours I’m at his house on a Sunday in June, I am uncomfortably aware that every moment we spend together is a moment when Fauci is not working.

  • Globally, cases of COVID-19 and related deaths are lower in June 2022 than they were at the beginning of the year. But the infection numbers are rising. Africa is no exception. The past two years have caused unimaginable disruption of normal life. And these disruptions continue to delay the recovery of economies and health systems in Africa. To meet the continuing health system challenges and avoid the same fate in future pandemics, African countries must take bold actions to repair their health systems and make them more resilient.

  • HIV care has come a long way in the more than 40 years since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the first report of AIDS in June 1981. The combined efforts of researchers, clinicians, public health officials, activists and people living with HIV have led to amazing advances in prevention and treatment. And despite many setbacks, cure research is also making progress.

  • New data showed a sharp decrease in CDC-funded HIV tests administered in health care and non-health care settings from 2019 to 2020 — primarily among groups disproportionately affected by HIV. “HIV testing is the first step in accessing HIV prevention and care services,” Elizabeth A. DiNenno, PhD, senior advisor in CDC’s Division of HIV Prevention, and colleagues wrote. “The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted health care delivery and might have affected HIV testing, which is critical to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States.”

  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prescriptions are supposed to be free under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but barriers persist. Some health plans don’t cover all available PrEP options (Truvada or Descovy pills and long-acting Apretude injections). What’s more, many insurers do not include lab tests and other related services. PrEP provision via telehealth increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a small survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that white gay and bisexual men are most likely to use tele-PrEP.

  • Rare is the reconstruction in a documentary that adds anything to the story. Rare, in fact, that it doesn’t actively hold up proceedings and require actors to perform (usually in caveman skins or low-budget Tudorbethan costume) for viewers something they were perfectly capable of visualising and would have been better off doing so.

  • In May, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp angered residents living with HIV and their allies when he cut a line in the state budget that would have allocated more than $4 million to expand Medicaid coverage to income-eligible, HIV-positive folks. Despite the fact that the state, whose population is booming, has the highest rate of new HIV cases in the country, Kemp vetoed the money on a technicality. He also said that he wanted such funds to go into the state’s regular Medicaid program to account for newcomers to the state.

  • Since April 2020, the US Census Bureau has been collecting data on the state of community health across the country through its Household Pulse Survey (HPS). Among many factors, this survey measures whether people have access to sufficient food, health care, employment, and housing. All of these categories combine to reveal the social determinants—or the circumstances under which people are born, raised, living, working, and aging―that affect health outcomes.
