AVAC Report 2014/15

With future of HIV prevention at a make-or-break moment, AVAC Report 2014/5 calls for a sharper, bolder strategy to end the epidemic.

  • AVAC's Executive Director Mitchell Warren discusses what needs to be done in 2015. Watch.
  • Don't Leave Out Prevention - UNAIDS' "90-90-90" targets emphasize quality of care but is silent on strategies critical in preventing HIV acquisition in the first place.

Part I

Ambitious, actionable targets are essential for an effective AIDS response. But targets can also become irrelevant if they’re not developed and pursued with thought, strategy and specificity. In this section, we review why targets matter and why the ones that exist—and the ones that don’t—may lead the AIDS response astray.

Part II

For the past three years, AVAC has used a “3-D” framework for conceptualizing the work that needs to be done across the HIV research-to-rollout continuum. In the pages that follow, we present our three top-line recommendations for work on the effort to deliver today’s strategies, demonstrate the utility and impact of emerging interventions, and develop additional strategies that will someday help to bring the epidemic to a conclusive end.

Advancing the Three-Part Agenda focuses on key actions across the research to rollout continuum.
  • Align high-impact strategies with human rights and realities. If science does not get synched up with human rights then there is little hope of bringing the epidemic to a conclusive end.
  • Invest in an oral PrEP driven paradigm shift.
  • Demand short-term results on the path to long-term goals.
