  • US funding swells HIV donor kitty by $1.1b

    After two years of flat funding, donor government disbursements towards fighting HIV in low- and middle-income countries increased by 16 per cent from $7 billion in 2016 to $8.1 billion in 2017, says a new UN report. However, this increase is not expected to last as it was largely due to a shift in timing of American support.

  • Number of people infected with HIV reduced by 50 percent

    New data from the Namibia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (NAMPHIA) survey shows a 50 percent reduction in the total number of new HIV infections per year in the last five years. The total national HIV prevalence in Namibia is now at 12.6 percent compared to 14 percent in 2014, according to the NAMPHIA results.

    HIV is particularly interesting to study in this manner, Leitner noted, as the virus mutates rapidly and constantly within each infected individual. The changing "genetic signatures" of its code provide a path that researchers can follow in determining the origin and time frame of an infection, and the computer simulations are now proven to be successful in tracking and predicting the virus's movements through populations.
