  • Transgender People Must Be Included in Every Aspect of HIV Research

    It sounds like a pretty common-sense research practice, and yet, it’s still not very common. Transgender people continue to be excluded from HIV research, despite both trans men and trans women being at increased risk for HIV acquisition for a variety of structural reasons. In the HIV community, we’ve seen this play out recently, with transgender men (along with cisgender women) left out of the research studies and approval for emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (Descovy), the second drug approved for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

    The two-year randomised control trial, which began in 2015, involved around 500 13 to 19-year-olds on antiretroviral treatment (ART) in rural Bindura and Shamva. Roughly half received standard of care adherence support from an adult counsellor, while the other half received standard support plus a combination of peer-led support through Zvandiri.

  • HIV PrEP Could Also Lead to Big Reductions in Gonorrhoea, Dutch Study Finds

    Its most important finding is probably that, even if a PrEP programme results in a 75 percent rise in the likelihood of condomless anal sex in gay men, it would nonetheless lead to falls in gonorrhoea, due to more STI testing and treatment. The idea that PrEP might lead to a rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in itself is not upheld, unless condom use falls almost to zero.

  • Federal Court Upholds Injunction Preventing Discharge of HIV-Positive Airmen

    Calling the US Air Force’s justifications for discharging military personnel living with HIV “outmoded and at odds with current science,” the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit last week upheld a lower court ruling in Roe and Voe v. Esper that allows two HIV-positive members of the Air Force, identified by pseudonyms Richard Roe and Victor Voe, to continue serving. The ruling also prevents, for now, the discharge of any other airmen based on their HIV status.

  • Accuracy in Self-Report of Viral Suppression Among HIV-Positive Men With HIV-Negative Male Partners

    These results highlight the need to provide interventions to MSM living with HIV to support access to care and ensure current knowledge of viral load, and to continue to support primary prevention of HIV through condom use and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). For couples, particularly serodiscordant male couples, interventions that can teach the couple how to collaborate to achieve and maintain viral suppression for the positive partner are an urgent and pragmatic programmatic priority that can equip couples with the knowledge required to correctly implement U=U strategies.
