  • A study that compared pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) usage rates in 19 US cities with the rates of HIV diagnosis has found that the cities with the highest rates of PrEP use in at-risk people had nearly 16 percent fewer diagnoses than the cities with the lowest rates, after adjusting for the proportion of people with HIV on treatment with suppressed viral loads.

  • While much attention is paid to the risks of HIV in men who have sex with men—the most heavily impacted demographic in the United States —in less developed nations such as those in Africa, there exists an outsize risk of HIV infection in young women. Reaching this population is a priority for infectious disease specialists, who are working to increase the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in this vulnerable group. One way to do that may be to bundle PrEP with birth control offerings in family planning clinics so as to increase uptake.

  • Scientists in China engineered human stem cells to mimic a rare form of natural immunity to the virus and transplanted them into a man with HIV and blood cancer. The gene-edited cells survived in the man’s body for more than a year without causing detectable side effects, but the number of cells was not high enough to significantly reduce the amount of HIV in his blood.

  • With reports earlier this year purporting of a second person having achieved complete HIV eradication (although experts cautioned it is way too early to declare the subject “cured”), the global scientific community is working harder than ever to find a functional cure for the virus. In order to do so, researchers are beginning to realize they have to deal with a long-ignored demographic: women.

  • A joint study by researchers from the International Institute of Applied Systems and Analysis, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Zambia has shown that HIV remains the leading cause of death in Zambia. This is despite the fact that people in sub-Saharan Africa are now living longer than they did two decades ago.

  • Today, AIDS is fairly well controlled – in developed countries anyway. But the virus, which actually has been infecting humans since at least 1959, and perhaps since the late 1940s, according to the AIDS Institute, is still very much around. Statistics compiled from a variety of sources by AmfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, paint an important picture of HIV/AIDS’s global and U.S. reach – showing where progress has been made, as well as where infections continue to rise.

  • With long-acting injectable antiretroviral (ARV) treatment for HIV on the cusp of a likely approval, researchers are fast at work on the subsequent generations of technologies that deliver long-acting treatment or prevention of the virus. Investigators are, for example, developing a matchstick-sized implant that could deliver ARVs for up to 12 months.
