    Long-acting injectable HIV prevention with cabotegravir was superior to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-emtricitabine (TDF/FTC; Truvada) in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, a randomized trial found.

    A large clinic in Seattle, Washington that has been tracking rates of HIV and STIs and the sexual behaviour of gay and bisexual men from 2002 to 2018 has found that anal sex without a condom with HIV-discordant or unknown partners has increased since 2013.

  • Kenya to Test ‘All-Powerful’ HIV Vaccine This Month

    A new HIV vaccine candidate that aims to neutralise nearly all strains of the virus will be trialled in Kenya beginning this month. Until now, scientists have been unable to make an effective HIV vaccine, partly because the virus mutates so quickly, so it’s hard to create a vaccine to work against it.

  • New Approaches for HIV Cure Research

    Starting antiretroviral therapy very early, before extensive immune system damage occurs, improves the prospects for a functional cure, according to research presented at the 11th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2021). But most people with HIV are diagnosed and start treatment later, during chronic infection. Another study found that a combination of antibodies that block interleukin 10 and PD-1 may help control the virus without antiretrovirals even at this later stage.

  • ‘Landmark’ Study Finds Artificial Antibodies Can Protect Against Malaria

    Add malaria to the growing list of infectious diseases that one day may be prevented with labmade antibodies. In an unusual study, nine people who received these monoclonal antibodies were deliberately exposed to mosquitoes carrying the parasite that causes malaria. None became infected—and the protection appears to last for more than half a year.
